Let’s face it: Marijuana and high design don’t usually go together. When we think of marijuana, we often think of dirty bongs, T-shirts with giant weed leaf designs, worn-out baja hoodies, wrinkled plastic baggies, and other scruffy and entirely unstylish stuff.
When you think about this, though, it’s all a bit weird. After all, the great designers in fashion and home goods are, in many cases, marijuana users themselves. Lots of stylish people and interior design gurus love their marijuana. Yet the “stoner stigma” is what we think about when we think about weed.
It’s time to break that cycle — and you can do your part by upgrading your own marijuana lifestyle. What worked in high school and college won’t cut it for you as an adult (and sorry, kids, but what cut it in the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s will not work for college kids in the era of legal weed and normalized marijuana use). Marijuana use is no longer illegal, no longer edgy, and certainly no substitute for a personality or a personal sense of style. Let’s work on upgrading your marijuana style.
What to wear
Let’s start with one area of marijuana style that shouldn’t exist at all: clothes.
Associating marijuana users with tie-dye and baja hoodies (or “drug rugs,” in the vernacular) is inaccurate and limiting. Roughly 55 million American adults use marijuana regularly, and they come from all walks of life. Some wear suits. Some wear T-shirts. Some wear dresses. Some wear sweaters.
One thing they should not wear is mall-stoner gear. Please, marijuana users: Don’t make marijuana a fashion choice.
That doesn’t mean you can’t dress like a hippie — a hip fitted tie-dye shirt can work, especially if you pair it with something unexpected, like classy footwear. And even the infamous weed leaf design can work in streetwear.
Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize
Smoking marijuana is a simple thing. It can be done with little more than marijuana and a fire source. But most of us use accessories when we smoke, and this is an opportunity to show off your discerning tastes.
Pay attention to the design of your accessories. Sure, it’s hard to go wrong with a classic multicolored bowl, but consider something a bit more striking. Opaque ceramic products are bolder than the typical gas-station bowl, and they catch the eye with simpler and more memorable designs. Clear glass eschews the multicolored madness of outdated hippie aesthetics in favor of classic, whiskey glasslike simplicity.
Go with brand name stuff, like hisi glass bongs. They’ll look nicer, be sturdier, and add a little style to your routine. Consider investing in vaporizing products, too. Vapes are discreet (there’s much less to smell), easy to pocket, and are welcome in more places. That’s just the thing for a hip marijuana user who wants more out of life than a smoky apartment.
The right gear can make a world of difference. So look like an adult. Get some classy marijuana gear.
Use smart storage
When you take out your marijuana, what does it look like? No, not the marijuana itself — we mean the act of taking it out. What’s the storage situation?
Do yourself a favor and throw out every wrinkled plastic baggie that you have ever used for weed. Get some nice airtight storage to seal in the smells, and invest in a nice box, jar, or even open-concept tray to store your stuff in or on.
Get it right, and you’ll have a smoking experience that is very different from the typical stereotype. You’ll take great-looking quality glassware out of your elegant storage choice, and you’ll enjoy a great experience with friends who do more than shop for black T-shirts at the mall. We marijuana users might not be able to single-handedly change the stereotypes that are out there, but that doesn’t mean that we have to live them.
